Over the past 3 years, Vancouver-raised May Cheung has been establishing herself as a versatile vocalist in the NY music scene. A graduate of McGill University in Jazz Voice (2007), May studied with Juno Award winner, Ranee Lee.
In 2007, May shared the stage with guitarist John Pizzarelli, and has sung extensively across Canada in cities including Vancouver, Victoria, Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal and Quebec with her own ensemble. In 2008, May was invited to participate in a workshop with the amazing Bobby McFerrin through the Kurt Weill Institute and in 2009, May was awarded a prestigious study grant from Canada Council for the Arts to live in New York City and study with New York Voices leader, Peter Eldridge. Since her arrival upon the scene in 2010, May has diverted her focus towards her singer-songwriter material while playing in such highly-touted venues as The Living Room, Rockwood Music Hall, Caffé Vivaldi, Sidewalk Cafe, Pianos, and Drom, just to name a few.
May’s debut album, “The Departure“, is set to be released this year (2014) with producer and guitarist Nir Felder. Featuring Rob Ritchie (The Last Royals) on guitars, Zachary Lober (David Binney) on bass and Dan Rieser (Norah Jones, Marcy Playground) on drums.
