Marie Daulne, Thank You for Zap Mama!

I honestly don’t even know where to start with this band, there is so much to say… Zap Mama has been around for over 20 years now and that’s almost as long as I’ve been a fan of theirs ever since seeing them perform in a small venue in a town called Kassel (Germany). The mastermind behind this group: Marie Daulne (born in East Zaire during the Congo crisis). Besides consistently putting out amazing music of course, consistency may not necessarily be the best word to describe Zap Mama. Over two decades Marie developed and evolved her musical style and influences, inspired by all sorts of genres. Her music has been described as polyphonic Afro-Pop, singing in English and French, enhanced with so many different elements from Funk, Soul, Hip Hop, Pop, Jazz, Nu-Soul and others. The group members around Marie also changed over the years, however, the talent level always remained top notch. Usually people classify Zap Mama as “World Music” which seems accurate, hence the international influences and sounds.

I’ve put together a playlist with some of my Zap Mama all time favorites. These also run on repeat amongst my “Top Rated” i-Tunes list. A lot of those come from their album “Ancestry in Progress“. Zap Mama is so much more than this playlist though. Check out their older tunes and you’ll discover the range of their capability and vocal creativity. Marie Daulne is a sparkling personality, a highly creative individual who will introduce you to another world. If you ever get the chance to see their show, don’t miss out!

Familiarize yourself with this band through our Zap Mama Artist Page, support their music by purchasing their albums and feel free to share, like and comment. We may have Marie in the studio soon so please stay tuned and look out for some Zap Mama Acoustic Gold!

“The voice is an instrument itself,” says Daulne. “It’s the original instrument. The primary instrument. The most soulful instrument, the human voice. Singing songs in French and English with African World Music Roots.”
